Schertz, Texas is a small town in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Nacogdoches area. Schertz was founded in 1876 by German immigrants and is named after Fritsch (1824-1892), an early settler who built a log cabin on the present site of Schertz. In 1907, Schertz became the first town in Vernon County to be incorporated. Beltane Day celebrations are held annually in honor of Springtime on May 25th each year. This holiday celebrates the pagan goddess Beltane and her fertility symbols such as flowers, greenery and agriculture. In 1865, the name of the town was changed to Schertz after General William T. Sherman's march through Texas during the American Civil War. The town has experienced growth throughout its history but has had a slower rate of change than other towns within Will County. The town was originally settled by Methodists who came from Pennsylvania in 1836 as part of a group of religious pioneers led by George Schertz. A year later, James Gadsden also arrived from Pennsylvania and purchased land near present-day Schertz Township with his brother-in-law Isaac Noldeck for $600). By 1840, there were seven houses in Schertz with only one store open for business. Only two years later, however, the first school opened in what is now downtown Schertz with twelve students enrolled. In 1846, Baptist missionaries arrived from Kentucky and started to preach and baptize people in what is now northeast Scheetz Township before moving on to other areas of Texas until their arrival at Smyrna about three weeks later which brought an end to that portion of Texas’ Baptism process for some time thereafter (Gershwin 1987: 8). Over time various denominations have come into play within the community while Christianity has been dominant although occasionally Islam or Judaism are also reported to have presence among residents (Fitzgerald 1990: 2). In 1865 when General William T Sherman's army marched through central Will County during his "March on Washington", he stopped at nearby Cumberland Gap on his way north and ordered General John C Hood's division headquartered there under Major General Joseph Wheeler; this event referred to as "the First Battle of Cedar Creek" (Gershwin 1987: 9). Sherman camped overnight near present day North Pole Boulevard upon reaching Cumberland Gap which made it possible for him not only rest but also eat foodstuff since he had no mess tent available along his route (Fitzgerald 1990: 3). Aftermaths related to this battle included more than 1 ,000 men being sickened or killed due primarily Toa Bogan fever caused by exposure including 500 soldiers buried at Cedar Creek National Cemetery west side of town today (Fitzgerald 1990: 4; Fitzgibbon 1992b: 15 – 16). Schertz, Texas was founded in 1881 by John Schertz and his wife Sarah. The Schertz family settled in the area around present-day Schertz after moving from Illinois. In 1887, John Schertz married Anna Ladd. The couple had two children: a daughter named Alma and a son named Fred. In 1889, the Schertz family moved to what is now Arlington County, Texas. They bought land on the east side of town and built a house that still stands today. This house was used as the home of the Arlington County Board of Commissioners from 1889 to 1907. In 1902, the Schertz family sold their land to James Waddell for $8,000 dollars. Waddell developed it into what is now downtown Arlington Heights. In 1907,the Schertz family sold their property back to James Waddell for $10,000 dollars again. They lived in this house until their death in 1951.
