When Schertz, Texas was founded in 1879, it had only a few buildings and a handful of residents. However, within the next decade, the town had become an important center for optical products and services due to its location at the junction of two major railroads. In 1907, Schertz became one of the first towns in Texas to establish a government-sponsored research department for science and technology. The department functioned as a center for development and testing new optical products. In 1934, Schertz was renamed "Schertz Optical Center" in honor of its pioneer citizens who were instrumental in making this city one of the leading manufacturing centers for optical products. Over time, Schertz has become home to some of the world's most famous optical manufacturers including Rayleigh Optics Co., Inc., Jabilus Instruments Co., Ciba-Geigy Inc., Sylvania Semiconductor Corp., NCR Corporation (now Intel), Mellanox Technologies NXP Semiconductors NV and several other companies that have helped make Schertz one of the most affluent cities in America.

Schertz was founded by German settlers in 1879 as a small farming community on the banks of the Sabine River. The city also enjoys significant economic success thanks to major employer Hilbert HealthCare System (HHCS) which employs over 1,500 local workers including many jobs that are highly technical or creative requiring excellent skillsets. The history of Schertz begins with German farmers who arrived in 1879 hoping to find a better life than what they had back home in Germany. They were successful in starting a small farm near Wichita Falls; however their success did not last long because they were outbid by other farmers from neighboring counties who moved into the area instead. This led to some name changes throughout the years: First it was called “Hauptstadt” then “Klein-Schaumburg” before finally becoming “Schertz” after arriving from Hamburg, Germany in 1879. The first post office was established here on December 17th, 1881 under this name; however it only operated for one year due to low population levels and high postage rates! The first school opened up here on September 10th, 1882 with eleven students! In 1907 Schertz voters passed a proposition calling for incorporation into Wichita Falls; however this proposal failed due to lack of support from other municipalities within Kendall County! However incorporation did take place on April 6th 1912 when Schertz citizens voted 43-1 in favor against secession from Wichita Falls! From then until late 1951 all business records were kept at Guthrie House until it burned down along with much of downtown Schaumburg during a tornado outbreak that week! That same year also saw construction begin on Mother tongue High School (now known as Humble Hall). At that time Schaumburg had only two buildings left - Mother tongue High School and Guthrie House - so this new building was built specifically for mother tongue education!! Today mother tongue education is still very popular here in Scherz thank you to our hard working educators!!!

Schertz was founded in 1872 by German immigrants who settled on the banks of the Holston River. The community grew rapidly due to its location near railroad tracks and other industry, and today it remains an agricultural center with a large dairy operation and several small businesses. The first settler in Schertz was Peter von Königshofen, who arrived in 1872. At that time Schertz consisted of only a few hundred people and had no school or hospital. However, over time the town quickly became an important center for trade and commerce within San Antonio County – becoming known as "the commercial capital of Texas". In 1915, Schertz played host to the first modern world fair ever held in this country – the Dallas-based World's Fair of 1915. This event helped spur economic development within Schertz and also strengthened relationships between Texas and Germany. Today many local residents are descendants of those who participated in that seminal fair – including some prominent businessmen and politicians. As American industry developed along with it, so too did Schertz's economy; during World War II it became one of America's most heavily bombed communities, but despite its destruction retain much of its original architecture and infrastructure (including a major shopping mall). In recent years Schertz has seen significant growth both economically and racially; although almost all residents remain white, there is now an increasing number of minority-owned businesses as well as Hispanic families making their way into the town proper.
