Schertz, Texas is located in the heart of the American south and has been a center for African American culture and industry for centuries. The city's economy depends on cotton, cattle, and other agricultural products. In 1915, Schertz Mayor John L. Rankin formed an organization to provide low-cost housing for African Americans in the city. In 1951, Schertz was designated as the " Negro City" by then President Eisenhower. The community has had many different names throughout its history including "The Black Wall Street," "Negro Pointe," and "Pioneer Village." In 1965, Schertz became home to one of the first black universities in Texas when Tuskegee University moved to town from Alabama. Since then, Schwarzenauer College has been one of Texas' most successful higher education institutions. Additionally, Schertz is home to two Fortune 500 companies - Dow Chemical Company and GEICO Corporation - as well as several professional sports teams including the Bulldogs (athletic), Mavericks ( baseball), Raiders (football) and Sabermetrics (tennis). Today, Schertz remains a vibrant community that continues to grow economically and culturally despite significant challenges faced by residents due to gentrification or displacement of traditional communities such as Black Panther Row.

Schertz, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. It is part of the Dallas–Arlington-Rockwall micropolitan area and is included in the Dallas-Fort Worth County. As of 2010, Schertz had a population of 993 people. The city was founded by German immigrants in 1874 as a farming community on the banks of the Trinity River. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn and beans for their own use and for export to Mexico City and other parts of Latin America. By 1890, Schertz had become an important shipping center with its port on the Trinity River serving cotton shipments from Louisiana to New York City and San Francisco. In 1897, Schertz became home to Texas A&M University (TAMU), one of America's largest universities at that time and one of its first coeducational institutions; today TAMU is one of five NCAA Division I schools located in Texas (along with Baylor University, Rice University, UT Austin, and UT Arlington). In 1925, Tarrant County was created from portions of Denton County; Schertz was incorporated within it as a city on July 1st that year along with Amherstburg (now Arlington Heights) and Westlake Village (now Irving). In 1970s/1980s, shoppers shopping at JCPenney found all sorts of items such as "toys", "photo albums", "household supplies" etc., which made up much more than 50% or so total merchandise sales inside American Eagle Outfitters stores throughout North America during those years In 1984 Schertz experienced some sort of significant tornado outbreak which destroyed many homes and businesses including two JCPenney locations until 1985 when damage remediation began completed On December 7th 1994 tornado touched down just outside town limits causing extensive damage including complete destruction to both JCPenney stores while also damaging several other buildings including three churches On October 22nd 1996 another major tornado touched down just outside town Limits making it one out four tornadoes to hit North Texas during this time period
