Schertz is a small town in Waller County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a settlement by German-Americans on the east side of the Trinity River in 1882. Schertz post office was established in 1886, and the first store was built in 1893. By 1910, Schertz had two churches and twelve businesses. The community experienced rapid growth during World War I when many men from Schertz enlisted in the military and families moved to Texas for work. After World War I ended, much of the commercial activity died out as people returned to their homes or left for other townships in Waller County. However, Schertz did experience some revival during the 1950s with new housing developments and expansions of nearby schools such as West Side High School (now Southside Middle School) which opened in 1951 and First Baptist Church (now First United Methodist Church). During the late 1990s through 2000s, economic decline hit Schertz hard with unemployment rates topping 50%. Many residents found themselves struggling to make ends meet while trying to keep up with changing lifestyles within an ever-changing economy. Despite all this difficulty however, many residents still cling onto hope that things will improve soon enough. In recent years there have been several large projects brought about by local groups or businesses aimed at revitalizing downtown Schertz including a new library building completed in 2013 followed by plans for an additional 300 jobs over 5 years bringing much needed investment to town center which has seen significant redevelopment since then including new restaurants, retail stores and even a hotel development set for completion later this year In addition to its rapidly growing downtown core; Schertz also contains two winding streets known locally as "The Gents" due to their high concentration of male business owners who used them as shortcuts from Downtown into their more populated areas - further evidence that until recently this tiny but vibrant community had considerable power over its surroundings!
