Schertz, Texas is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. Schertz was founded in 1879 by John Schertz. It became part of Hidalgo County on February 15, 1902. The name of the town comes from German words "Schreiber" meaning 'scribe' and "Tschwartz" meaning 'settler'. In 1905, the first post office in Schertz was opened and named after James Fenton McKenzie. As it grew to become one of the largest towns in Hidalgo County, Schertz annexed parts of San Antonio and Waco on December 16, 1907. On July 9, 1912, a fire destroyed all but three homes in Schertz; this event is often cited as the start of the town's decline. The last post office closed in 1971 and it has been vacant ever since. Today only a few foundations remain standing reminders of what once flourished hereabouts: an early cotton gin still operational (1891), Pioneer Cemetery (1902), Missionary Baptist Church and Scheetz Indian School (1905-1970).
