The first settler in Schertz was Levi Stroud who arrived from Illinois in 1827. Two years later, David Hance moved to Schertz with his family from Tennessee. By 1830, there were twelve residents living in Schertz. A post office was established in 1831 and the town became a county seat in 1836 after Medina County was created from parts of Dallas and Kaufman counties. In 1840, the citizens of Schertz petitioned Congress to create a school district within Medina County that would serve all of Schertz Township including present-day Schertz Village limits. On November 15th of that year, Congress approved the request and $5,000 was appropriated to build a schoolhouse and provide teachers for the district's seven schools within six months. The school opened on December 4th of that year by Rev Wm Jourdan with twenty students attending grades one through eight; it served as an early model for public schools across America In 1865, due to railroad development near present day Arlington Heights (now Arlington) , four railroads formed a company called Dallas & Fort Worth Railroad which extended into Medina County from both directions . On October 17th 1865 , Rancho San Antonio de la Bahia - now part of Arlington Heights - sold two hundred acres (80 ha) east of present day Flores Avenue to John Sutter who had just settled down on land he had purchased northeast of San Angelo . The following year saw another two hundred acres (120 ha) sell adjacent to Flores Avenue ; this land became what is today Schaumburg Drive Schertz began experiencing growth at this time due to new transportation developments such as the Texas Central Railway which connected Wichita Falls with Amarillo On July 1st 1870 , James Pemberton located three thousand feet (900 m) north along US 183 between Flores Avenue and US 6 just outside Schaumburg Drive while trying unsuccessfully to homestead on property he owned southeast of Uptown . This location would become known as Pemberton Hill Pemberton's failed attempt led him backtracking several miles southward along 183 until he reached what is now US 183 Business Street where he started building his Depot/Warehouse which still stands today overlooking Schaumburg Drive albeitdisabled since 1945
