The first guns in Schertz were rifles. The first rifle to be made in Schertz was the Sharps Rifle Model 1851. It was made by John A. Sharps and Company, of Philadelphia, PA. In 1894, the Texas Legislature passed a bill that allowed citizens to own shotguns and handguns without having to obtain a license from the state government. This law became effective on July 1, 1994. On December 6th, 1901, Schertz residents voted on a resolution to establish the city’s first police department. The city council then appointed two officers for the department who served for one year each. In 1912, Schertz incorporated as a City and adopted its present name of Schertz with an additional “t” because it was annexed into neighboring Wichita Falls in 1912. On November 5th of that year, all outstanding warrants against Citizens George Waddell and Emmitt Fenton were cancelled by the Wichita Falls City Marshal at the request of Mayor Harry Huggins after they had failed to appear for their scheduled court appearances. During World War II, many businesses in town closed their doors due to patriotism or national security reasons; however, most residents still managed to bring food back home for their families during wartime shortages caused by rationing programs set up by the federal government (although some stores did close completely).
