In 1892, Schertz incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly. Growth halted after World War I but resumed after the end of World War II. Schertz is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 537 at the 2010 census. It was named after Captain Johann Friedrich Schertz, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a Major General in the Texas Army National Guard. The Schertz School District #1 is one of nine school districts located within Williamson County. The first settler in Schertz was James Hetzel, who arrived around 1828. By 1840, three families had moved to what is now Schertz from Missouri: John and Nancy Cline, Benjamin Cline’s father-in-law David Gentry and his wife Martha Fannin (née Pryor). In 1845, Captain Hans Jurgensen bought land east of the town from James Hetzel for $50 per acre. Jurgensen married Anna Maria Kern on this property in 1848. In 1850 local merchants Isaac Weems and Averill Hill organized what became known as the "Schertz Protective Association" to provide for public education for children living near Fort Worth during the time when it was under construction on nearby San Antonio Creek west of present day Schertz. The group also established an armory and began purchasing land north of town to build a depot for supplies coming into Fort Worth from Mexico City by way of San Antonio Creek. This fortifications were designed to protect Central America againstinvaders during the American Civil War and later during Reconstruction period in America following its end. On October 26, 1865 – days after Confederate General Robert ELee surrendered at Appomattox Court House – Union troops burned down most of Schertz while supplies were still being stored there; only seven homes remained standing by 1880 according to records kept by then Pecan Grove School District Superintendent Driscoll Drakeberry (later Irvin Drakeberry). After that event business opportunities dried up due to competition from other towns in Williamson County which had access to similar resources that Schertz could not offer such as railroads or water systems. In 1870 local citizens Jacob Burkholder and George Ladd organized another group called "The Citizens' League" with the goal of improving roads and schools along San Antonio Creek so that more people could live close together instead of scattered across miles apart like they did before 1870 when farming activities took over much of village life because wagon trains brought produce back home rather than going all the way through Mexico City where prices would be too high for American consumers living northeast of Sherwood Forest Ranch southwest of Austin/Round Rock on IH 35W which offered agricultural goods available at better prices than those found further downriver such as Brownsville or El Paso beyond Interstate 10NM including much closer access to markets inside their cities Limits thereby reducing transportation costs associated with bringing goods long distances thus freeing up resources used more efficiently elsewhere without sacrificing quality or safety while preserving cultural heritage sites rare today due eitherto distance or lack thereof relative thereto How useful these insights may be currently applied especially given today's global economy wherein transportation options are few if any compared with years past
Schertz was founded in 1879 by German immigrants, Wilhelm Schertz and his wife Anna. The Schertz family operated a general store for many years before moving to their present location in 1907. Over the years, the Schertz family has also been involved in agriculture, banking, and other businesses. In 1963, the Schertz family donated land to the city of Schertz for use as a public park. The park is now known as Wilhelm Schertz Park.
