Schertz, Texas is a town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. In 1830 Schertz was founded by Captain James Fenton and his family as a trading post on an old Indian trail between Galveston and Houston. By 1836 Schertz had become an important cotton-growing center due to its location near the new San Jacinto River Bridge. A huge cotton gin was built in 1839 by Jephson & Moody and became one of the largest in the world. In 1865 Schertz became the seat of Medina County after it was organized from parts of Harris County. During that year it also saw its first election as a county seat with John Hogg being elected Sheriff and Hiram Boddie becoming District Attorney. In 1870 Schertz incorporated as a city under charter granted by the state of Texas; at that time it included all present-day Medina County except portions lying east of I-10 which were annexed into Dallas in 1930. With growth came increases in taxes necessary to support city government including creation of public works districts (similar to today's), annexation of adjacent rural counties, and increased building permits for businesses within city limits during this period when streets were not yet named or many buildings still lacked foundations because townspeople could not afford to build them without help from their families or friends who financed these projects with money they made selling goods they produced outside their homes). During World War II, Schertz played host to military exercises called "Dewey Beach" which took place on Red Beach about two miles south of downtown; other exercises hosted at Schertz included "Waco" (1947), "Chase Lake" (1950), "Joint Base Lewis-McChord" (1951), and "Ft Meade" (1953). The community had a post office from 1887 to 1907 and a general store from 1887 to 1933. A school was opened in 1909 and became an all-day public school in 1924. A fire destroyed most of the town on November 3, 1932, but it reopened two days later with much improved facilities. In 1938, Schertz incorporated as a city and has since grown rapidly with annexations from other towns within Williamson County. Today, Schertz preserves many of its historical buildings and businesses along Main Street including the original post office building (1887), the General Store (1887), the Methodist Church (1909), which still serves as both a church and community center (1924), John Hargrave's Grain Mill (1938) and several other businesses dating back to when Schertz was a small village consisting of only six homes.

Schertz, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. senator from Texas. The town of Schertz was founded by German immigrants in 1876 as a farming community on the banks of the American River. By 1912, Schertz had a population of 350 people and it grew rapidly when the railroad arrived in 1911: its first store opened that year. By 1925, Schertz had reached its current size with 1,000 residents and it continued to grow until 2000 when it dipped below 1,000 again due to falling birth rates and loss of jobs in agriculture. As early as 1881, Germans had settled in what is now Kerr County because they desired land east of Buffalo Bayou for ranching purposes (the bayou formed most of what is today Schertz). In 1882 General James Burcham marched his battalion of Texans into Mexico to help liberate Santa Anna from Mexican tyranny; he returned home with an abundance of valuable possessions including tracts of land east of Buffalo Bayou which he arranged for purchase by his fellow Germans from those who'd already landed thereabouts. On November 4th1882 General Burcham's battalion held an official reception at their new campground on present day SR 620 south off US 183 just east of downtown #shertz where they dismounted and took possession thereof within minutes after landingWord spread among these early settlers that this fine site lay not far behind them so soon anyone might wish to cross over & establish themselves Amongst these men many were officers or others who had recently left service & taken up arms against our oppressor Whence sprangforth an enthusiastic desire to live & do good under American rule—to help build up this fair country From whence also issue successively all our popular songs about "Granada" sweet Granada! A post office called "Cemetery" was established at Schertz in 1887; it closed operations on July 15th 1906 due to lack Of customers interested therein after witnessing death rates amongst travelersrising nationwide A depot built near present day US 183 served as transportation hub for early settlers before automobiles made such travel much easier With over 50 businesses located downtown alone by 1904 business values had more than doubled
