Schertz is a city in Callahan County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,847 at the 2010 census. Schertz is the home of Texas A&M University and was named after General John A. Schertz who fought in the American Civil War. The first settler in Schertz was James S. Herrington who located on May 7, 1853 within present-day Schertz Municipal limits. He also founded what is now part of City of Schertz on December 12, 1859 and named it for General John A. Schertz (1815-1892). At that time there were no towns or villages within present day Callahan County other than Fort Worth and Arlington Heights which had been chartered by the Texas Legislature on July 16, 1840 as Towns of Crawford and Richland Counties respectively. A post office called "Schertz" was established in 1865 by J.C. Bigham from Old Hickory Township west of today's downtown area; it remained in operation until 1907. In 1902 Wm Ransom bought land east of town from Don Kapp to form the current site of City Hall which now stands on what used to be Pryor Road (now US 287). In 1905 David Dockery opened a general store at SE corner Fifth Street & Pryor Road which became one of the most important commercial establishments in town until its closing in 1978 when Interstate 10 bypassed town Limits entirely creating an intercity highway service area with more competitive retail options available close by including Sam’s Club across I-10 Eastbound lanes just south of precursor Loop 410 exit ramp #5 near military bases Camp Bowie/Eagle Ford Sheridan AFB Alice TX etc.). On October 15th 1915 Lt Col George T Marshall along with his staff officers left Ft Worth for their new command Post at The Cedars near Wichita Falls then took up quarters here later moving into barracks next door to Mrs Porter’s grocery store where they met their future wife Alma Lillian Marshall born January 17th 1915 daughter of Mrs Porter & Capt Elisha Gentry aka “Lillie Mae” . Alma would eventually become known as “the Queen Of Schertz” due both to her influence over local government decisions which affected all citizens regardless gender or social class while also managing an extensive real estate business empire becoming one half owner/operator/managerof several major league professional sports teams throughout her career including being president/ownerof The Dallas Cowboys American Football Team beginning play in 1960) as well as founder & CEO/co-founder(with husband) Of Kay Jewelers chain among many other accomplishments
