Schertz, Texas is a city in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 17,746 at the 2010 census. Schertz is located on the Llano River and its eastern border is the Brazos River. The original name of Schertz was Pembina. The city was founded in 1881 by John Schertz Sr., an American Civil War veteran from Pennsylvania who decided to settle a crossroads between Wichita and Dallas. In 1896, he donated land for a town square that still stands today. The first post office opened in 1903. It served as the county seat until 1907 when it was moved to Corsicana because of its location on the Trans-Texas Railway (now part of I-10). In 1909, Schertz became one of only two cities in Texas to be granted incorporation as a municipality by the Texas Legislature under then-Gov. James Graves Baker III after being recommended by his predecessor, Sam Houston II. On April 14, 1916 – more than 100 years ago – Schertz's first mayor William Halsey delivered remarks before an audience of business leaders at Baylor University's Law School entitled "The Promise of Municipalism." That same year saw signature achievements by Mayor Halsey such as creating streetscape improvements and erecting City Hall (then known as "The White House") which still stands today inside City Hall Park off Main Street in downtown Schertz - all while keeping alive important traditions like carnival days and street fairs that are now experienced throughout neighboring counties every summer! Today’s skyline features modern skyscrapers with beautiful architectures; anchor institutions like UT Southwestern Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine have built world-class research facilities nearby; major league sports teams including the Astros/Astros baseball team play their games out there; top ranked schools like Rice University [in Rice] offer world class education while smaller colleges dot the landscape; arts & culture abound with many local festivals taking place each year; businesses have flourished since incorporation through annexation by neighboring counties etc.; agriculture continues to play an important role in local life with crops such as corn, wheat and cotton grown abundantly near numerous small townships scattered throughout Williamson County...Schertz has gone from strength to strength over these past hundred years!

The town grew quickly due to its location and access to the river. By 1870, Schertz had a population of seventy-eight people and five stores. In 1881, Schertz moved from its original site to what is now downtown. Schertz experienced some economic growth in the late 1800s due to railroads coming through the area, but it declined during the 20th century. Today, Schertz has a population of about sixty-five people and two businesses.
