The end of World War I led to reductions in business activity in Santa Fe; nevertheless, Mayor Lorenzo Torres O'Connell proclaimed December 14th 1918 "Christmas in Santafe" due to this time period's international significance. After World War II ended, downtownSantaFe experienced significant revitalization which included new movie theaters and restaurants along High Street between Plaza de Armas and Bernalillo Streets; however downtownSantaFe also lost much of its historical character due to redevelopment projects over the past few decades. Today many visitors explore downtownSantaFe through Old Town Square or via blocks surrounding High Street between Plaza de Armas and Bernalillo Streets

In 1846, the Republic of Texas was founded by Texans who left Mexico after the Mexican-American War. Santa Fe was founded in 1867 as the first ranch town in this new republic. The town grew rapidly due to its proximity to the railroad and its ability to sell goods manufactured in nearby Austin. By 1890, Santa Fe had a population of over 10,000 people and was home to four churches and two schools. In 1912, Santa Fe became an independent city with its own government and economy.
