The Santa Fe Rifle and Pistol Museum is one of the oldest rifle museums in the United States. The museum was founded in 1881 by Captain John C. Fremont, who had purchased a pistols and rifles from José Martin de la Hoz, governor of New Mexico. The first collection at the museum was of Mexican Revolution-era firearms. In 1936, the museum moved to its present location on Market Street in downtown Santa Fe. The current collection includes more than 2,000 firearms from around the world. The Santa Fe Rifle and Pistol Museum is open Monday through Friday 9am to 4pm; Saturday 10am to 3pm; and Sundays 12pm to 4pm. Admission is free for all visitors. The original plaza where today's downtown sits was known as Plaza de los Indios (Indian Square), and served as government center for both Pecos County and Chihuahua State until 1895 when it moved to what is now First Avenue north of Main Street. In 1907 during construction on the new University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque, workers discovered evidence that a large underground chamber under Constitution Avenue had been used by Native Americans for centuries as a ceremonial burial place for their chiefs and other important leaders. A archaeological excavation conducted by archaeologists from UNM began in 1951 revealed more than 4500 pre-Columbian artifacts including projectile points and lithographs dating back to 10th century A.D.; this discovery helped identify Paleoindians who occupied present-day Pecos County before arriving in North America about 12,000 years ago

Cerda built what is now Fifth Avenue and part of Seventh Street in downtown Santa Fe as well as two other roads leading out of town: Gadsden Road and Alamo Road. On July 14, 1846, Cerda opened his first store at Sixth and Washington streets in what is now Plaza De Armas (now Independence Hall). Cerda's store was one of only four stores open during that early period when towns were still small villages with few businesses open before citizens started trading goods back and forth between their homes and their businesses Managed by José María Vasconcelos y Salazar as director general for public works & improvements; With profits from his stores he reinvested them back into his business which grew rapidly until it reached its present size The growth of SantaFe began when entrepreneur Antonio López founded Los Alamos Manufacturing Company on April 6th 1870 which manufactured oil lamps
