In 1845 Mexican General Antonio López de Neve established Rancho Grande de Tejas near present-day San Angelo while still stationed in Vera Cruz; however this rancho proved unprofitable so Neve sold it to William Hogg on December 12, 1846 for $8 per acre ($200 per km2) 1847 saw another sale when Colorado Territory was organized following the Mexican War and Hogg sold Rancho Guadalupe del Norte (now Alamosa) east of Fredericksburg for $5 per acre ($100 per km2). The Hudspeth Purchase completed Santa Fe's incorporation as a town on March 17, 1850 with David Hudspeth as its first mayor. In 1860s many settlers from Arkansas pushed westward along theSanta Elena River under leadership of Colonel Nathaniel Lyon who named their new land "Arkansas". By 1870 most residents had also migrated to Oklahoma Territory where they continue to live today among other descendants of those early settlers
