Spanish colonists founded what would become Santa Fe in 1765 and established a presidio on the site that still exists today. In 1824, Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna awarded land to General José Joaquín Castro to form Rancho San Antonio de Atascadero. This grant provided incentives for settlement, which led to the growth of Santa Fe and its subsequent incorporation into Mexican Republic. The first Englishman to visit what is now SantaFe was Captains John Cook and James Cook on HMS Discovery in 1768 while en route from Panama to China. They named their landfall "Atascadero" after Pima Chief Atacama who had warned them of an upcoming Indian attack on their shipwrecked convoy off California’s coast two weeks earlier. A post office called “Atascadero” was established at this location on October 25, 1836 by order of Governor Manuel Micheltorena with letters patent from Emperor Ferdinand VII of Spain; it served as our present day spelling until 1850 when it reverted back to its original name: "Santa Fé". The town took its present name from Mount Real (today's downtown), which had been sighted by Father Diego Rivera during his trek along the Colorado River from Ciudad Juárez across New Mexico Territory in 1928-29.. In 1881–82 local resident Lorenzo Semple built a large adobe house known as “Semple Hall” for use as a courthouse and jail during Reconstruction days following America's Civil War including over 100 arrests made there under Sheriff Tom Moore.. In 1922–23 Elihu Root served as U S Minister Resident accredited to Chihuahua; he vacated his quarters at Semple Hall due to rain so moved into Main Post Office building later renamed Federal Building.. On November 15th 1923 Mayor Shoemaker placed a cornerstone at focal point of newly completed main plaza honoring veterans killed or missing in action during World War I patriotism drive climaxing with parade preceding annual Fiesta De Los Infantes celebration occurring every 4th Sunday Of May Parade route approximately 1/2 mile east corner First Street & Third Avenue mainline US railroad tracks crossing main plaza near old munitions plant
