In the early 1800s, Santa Fe was a small town in southern Texas. The community was founded by Spanish immigrants and quickly grew into a center of commerce and culture. In 1876, Santa Fe became the capital of New Mexico and the city experienced explosive growth. Santa Fe, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,612 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The first settlers in Santa Fe were Gideon Johnson and his family who arrived from Missouri on December 12, 1827. They founded a log cabin on what is now Post Road. In 1830 Gideon and his wife Marilla made the purchase of six acres (2 ha) of land in what is now downtown Santa Fe for $4 per acre. This gave them title to all of present-day downtown Santa Fe with one exception: blocks east and west of Main Street were given to John Murtaugh who built the Fort Worth Stockyards there in 1849. In 1845 Gideon's son John married Marilla's sister Rachelle Cartwright and moved their family to Santa Fe where they began farming cotton and raising hogs, goats, cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens and bees. They also started an unsuccessful Attempted Colonization Society which aimed to settle land in New Mexico that had been claimed by Spain as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1861 Gideon died suddenly at age 71 while out grazing his cows on what are now Springbrook Drive and trail near Interstate 10 outside downtown SantaFe; he was buried in Masonic hill Cemetery just northeast of downtown SantaFe next to his father-in-law Reuben Laddie Johnson Sr.. His widow Marilla continued farming until her death at 91 years old on November 6th 1948; she was buried beside her husband inside Masonic Hill Cemetery just northeast of downtown SantaFe next to their daughter Jennie Sauerline Johnson.. Their granddaughter Darlene Sauerline has continued farmland operations within city limits since 1989 when shePurchase 5 blocks east from Main Street along Elmwood Avenue from her late mother Jennie's executors/ assigns known as "The block grant" for future development including annexation into the City Limits property currently known as "DowntownSantaFe." DowntownSantaFe has experienced significant redevelopment over time with several big name developers such as Sony Pictures Television®, Home Depot®, Wells Fargo & Company®, IBM®, LinkedIn® Headquarters*, Macy’s*, Staples* (* plus many other smaller businesses) located along Elmwood Ave., making it a lively mixed use district full of restaurants*, bars* (*plus several thousand residential units*) housing associations**(*including Historic District Landmark properties like First National Bank Building), clinics***(*including Women’s Medical Center*****) as well as retail spaces available for lease or development!
