In 1865 Pedro Miguel Rodríguez founded El Paso del Norte about northeast of today's downtown Santa Fe; this community became a thriving commercial center with flour mills and stores until it was destroyed by fire in 1901. The railroad arrived shortly thereafter; traffic increased dramatically with settlers heading for new irrigation projects northward along the Rinconada River.
