Santa Fe has been inhabited for over two thousand years and is the oldest continuously populated area in Texas. The region that now includes Santa Fe and New Mexico was first settled by Paleo-Indians who created villages on the San Pedro River. European exploration began in 1736 when Captain James Cook discovered Pecos Island and named it after King George II of Great Britain. Spanish explorers also visited this area during this time and named various features along the Rio Grande after Spanish nobility or governors. In 1846, Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered General José Joaquín Herrera to march his army southward from Austin to find new land for Mexico as part of his effort to conquer northern Texas. Herrera's force reached Santa Fe on May 10th, 1846 and took possession of the town without opposition from its residents. On December 20th, 1846 Santiago García de la Cruz y Oñate surrendered Alamo Heights to Mexican forces after a two-day battle that ended with 55 Mexican casualties and five Texan fatalities. Santa Fe became part of Mexico City following its defeat in the Battle of Tejas against American forces under Ulysses S Grant on April 6th, 1865. Santa Fe was briefly occupied by Confederate forces during the American Civil War before being abandoned due to lack of food supplies combined with Union advances into Mexico City en route to retake Austin (see Battle of Palo Alto). After the war ended, Santa Fe slowly recovered until a large fire destroyed most of downtown on November 16th, 1890 which damaged much historical documentation including many old buildings dating back more than 200 years The city resumed its original name - "SantaFe" - on October 15th, 1907 when an act was passed by both houses of Congress establishing Hudspeth County as a county within Kansas Territory based on recommendations made by Governor John Crain On January 1st 1908 voters approved annexation by Dallas County; however $7 million worth of bonds were issued to finance construction projects associated with annexation which never materialized On July 25th 1920 voters approved chartering Oficina Municipal del Petróleo y Gases Corporativas de la Ciudad de México (Municipal Oil Corporation Office) as an independent municipal organization making it one of only three municipalidades statewide outside Oficinas Públicas federales (Federal Offices), followed soon thereafter by other similar organizations such as Comercio Mayor (municipal commerce) Finally ceded effective power over all municipal affairs directly to their respective councils/councilors upon ratification through referendum held on November 9th 1930 resulteding in creation thereof as Santafélito Municipality In 1955 El Paso annexed Santafélito Municipality creating an adjacent urban agglomeration known today as El Paso Urban Area . Thereafter numerous internal changes occurred resulting in expulsion or retirement or appointment or dismissal from office certainmembersofSantafélito Municipal Council including Mayor Manuel Gomez , Alcalde Arturo Valencia y Castillo Cushing et al., among others . The city was named for Saint Francis Xavier (1746–1826), who had been born in France but had become a convert to Catholicism and moved toNewMexico when he heard about Jesús Christ’s coming ashore on Long Island in 1624. In 1835, SantaFe became part of United States territory following its admission into Congress under President Andrew Jackson; it remained so until 1912 when it reverted back to Mexican hands under Treaty No. 8 signed by president Porfirio Díaz
