During the Mexican-American War (1846-1847), many Texans fought for Mexico against America. Some of these Texan patriots formed companies called "Guerillas," which were named after Spanish guerrilla fighters who had successfully fought against American forces during the earlier war years. One such company was "Los Pinos" (), which raised money to buy arms and supplies for its guerilla activities from local farmers () and ranchers(). Bustamante donated land near what is currently Second Avenue between Constitution Boulevard and Market Street to build a military academy known as Don Carlos Military School (); it opened in 1853 as one of the few schools in New Mexico dedicated to educating soldiers instead of mere civilians (). After several years of operation, Don Carlos Military School closed due to lack funding; however it reopened under new management in 1861 as Don Carlos Academy again (). Don José Rios Bustamante also donated land east of Bernalillo Creek to become University Park(), which included both University Avenue () and Santana Row ()) today’s blocks east of Cathedral Square (); this university remained open until 1966 when it merged with New Mexico State University (). Today's blocks south of Crescent Avenue () form Downtown SantaFe’s eastern edge. In 1912, Northern Electric Railway Company moved their electric line from Albuquerque to Santa Fe via First Street (). The first train arrived on December 5th (); this electric line ran through downtownSantaFe until 1977 when North American Power Company constructed their own power plant further west on I-40 making Downtown SantaFe effectively autonomous from Albuquerque metropolitan area gridlock ordinances . In 2002 ADEQ (the state agency responsible for electricity distribution) changed all municipally mandated deregulation regulations withinNM so that City fathers could approve any new construction or renovation without taking public input - effectively ending old streetcar service along First Street between Market/First Ave., Plaza de Mayo main square & Cathedral square! All streetcar operations will be transitioned over to bus service starting Monday morning !! Unfortunately most merchants along 1st St have already closed shop because they rely on streetcars :(

The Santa Fe Trail was a wagon road that connected the eastern United States with New Mexico and Chihuahua. It was first built in 1799 by the American Fur Company and became popular among settlers because of its shorter distance than other roads. The trail reached its peak in 1846 when it linked California and Texas. However, it was eventually abandoned due to increasing travel times and competition from railways.
