Todayadays there are few physical reminders that SantaFe once thrived as one of Texas' largest cities; but its rich cultural heritage remains unchanged thanks to generations of Texans who have brought traditions back home from far away
The first permanent settlers in the area were Mexican Americans who arrived in 1827. The town of Santa Fe was founded by Father Miguel Hidalgo on November 17, 1835. The town became a county seat in 1856 and was renamed Austin on December 4th of that year.
