In 1898 Mexican President Porfirio Diaz issued an order authorizing the demolition of all intracounty buildings including the old courthouse which housed court records for much of Travis County until that year. This event marks the beginning of an era during which local politicians exerted more control over their communities than they do today. When World War I started in 1914, many Texans decided that war would be a good way to make money (many foundered after providing goods or services for needlessly expensive bounties). Consequently, industry boomed as munitions manufacturers turned out products such as shells and bullets needed for military campaigns around the world while farmers took advantage of wartime demand for crops like cotton (now essential to sustenance but worth billions during peacetime) and cattle (needed not only for meat but also milk, eggs, cheese).
