San Marcos is a city in Texas, located on the Gulf of Mexico between Corpus Christi and Galveston. The population was 805 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio-Houston metropolitan area. The town started as a small community on the banks of the Colorado River in what is now downtown San Marcos. In 1836, after Mexican president Santa Anna was driven out of Austin by US forces, he and his wife ordered their presidencia (presidential palace) built on a bluff overlooking the river so they could watch visitors come and go. A few years later, when Mexicans threatened to secede from Texas if their president did not concede their right to vote in state elections, General Sam Houston called upon his friend John Farragut to drive them out of Austin by force. By 1840, most of San Marcos had moved away because of Choctaw War efforts and malaria epidemics that killed many residents; however, some original families still lived there until 1848 when hostilities ended with newly arrived American troops taking possession. In 1846 Presidencia Vallejo married José de Jesús Castro y Rojas (1814-1892), an army general who had fought for General Polk during Mexico’s war for independence from Spain. They soon became parents to two daughters: María del Carmen Vallejo Castro y Rojas (1847-1937) and Concepción Vallejo Castro y Arroyo (1850-1910). When Presidencia died suddenly in 1854 while giving birth to her fourth daughter – only one year after her husband’s death – San Marcos became effectively vacant until it was filled by extraterritorial citizens born outside of Texas when Rangers began patrols along the Mexican border in response to Adobe Walls threats made against American settlers north of Matamoros Creek Rangers were especially active at night because smugglers frequently used dark alcoves near Missions Bridge where they could cross into Tamaulipas without being detected. As early as 1857 local merchants had petitioned Congress for authority to raise 1,000 riflemen under military command to check smuggling activities along the Rio Grande but no action was taken until 1860 when President Buchanan sent Major Worth Mission with orders “to suppress any lawless bandittie within this limits” Worth decided against using Regular Army troops since such action would inflame revolutionary sentiments throughout America After monthslong negotiations with Mexican officials Worth issued an order commanding all resident aliens “withdraw immediately or be punished accordingly” This order has been cited as one reason why few Anglo Americans fled southward duringthe Texan Revolution . Most Texans chose instead to stay behind while their compatriots went off into battle However, less than 2% opted for voluntary exile rather than pay taxes and live under constant threat of seizure or execution . When news reached San Marcos that its citizens were about to experience violence firsthand at Palo Alto Station several hundred miles upriver another group consisting mainly volunteers crossed overland from New Braunfels before reaching San Marcos late on November 10th 186

In 1836, San Marcos was founded by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna as a mission in what is now the city of Austin, Texas. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 100 families. In 1849, Mexico gained its independence from Spain and the new government decided that San Marcos should be the capital of Texas. The town prospered until the early 1870s when oil discoveries began to occur in nearby Austin. This led to an increase in business and population in San Marcos but also caused some social problems because of the high levels of traffic and noise created by oil exploration. In 1872, San Marcos became an independent republic under Governor Manuel Micheltorena and eventually became part of the United States after Mexican independence was granted. The city continued to grow rapidly after becoming Americanized, reaching a population of over 2,000 people by 1900. However, during World War II (1939-1945), San Marcos experienced significant destruction due to Japanese bombing raids on the city center and other areas. Despite this damage, however,San Marcos remained one of America's most important urban centers during World War II until it was destroyed again by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. After Harvey's devastation came gentrification which has led to increased crime rates in certain areas of the city center while contributing to housing decay throughout much of downtown San Marcos
The city of San Marcos was founded in 1846 by Captain Antonio de la Hoya and his men as the only permanent settlement on the site of present-day Austin. The first post office was established in 1851, and the city's first mayor, Manuel L. Alvarado, served from 1861 to 1865. During the Mexican-American War (1846–1848), San Marcos became a military post belonging to General Sam Houston's army. In 1850, San Marcos' charter granted it self-government under a mayor and six council members. In 1875, San Marcos incorporation formally changed its name to Austin when the state of Texas created its own municipalities system. In 1902, San Marcos absorbed portions of neighboring Medina County into its municipal boundaries. In 1916, Austin annexed most of Medina County including San Marcos and annexed the town of La Villita for a total population increase to over 100,000 people; at this time it was also one of only two cities in Texas with more than 100,000 residents. During World War II—the largest American war effort in history—San Marcos played an important role as an Army airfield Auxiliary Base Camp during Operation Overlord and later became known as " home port" for various B-29 Superfortress bombers stationed at Travis Air Force Base until their withdrawal in 1945. For many years after World War II there were no major industrial projects undertaken within or near San Marcos; instead it relied largely upon agriculture which continues to be its mainstay today despite recent efforts by developers to revive downtown development along Slaughter Lane which has been largely unsuccessful due primarily to high property values associated with adjacent land parcels that have remained undeveloped since the early 1970s when prices skyrocketed following multiple rezonings that increased density adjacent to Interstate 10)
