At this point, Houston became President Andrew Johnson’s choice as commander-in-chief of Union forces invading northern Mexico; he accepted on December 15th 1865 at City Hall in Austin with Ulysses S. Grant as his senior advisor and John Fithian as secretary of war under Johnson. By 1870, about 90% of Texans were born within ten miles of Austin; however this percentage decreased to 60% by 1900 due to the growth of Dallas and other nearby cities. After Reconstruction ended in America following the Civil War (1865-1877), violence returned to Texan society as newly freed slaves moved into formerly white neighborhoods where they clashed with veterans from the Confederacy or their former owners over land and education opportunities for new arrivals.
