In San Marcos, Texas, the first expansion of the Mounted Police Department was authorized on November 2, 1875. The department was initially organized as a volunteer force and consisted of only six officers. On October 15, 1886, the San Marcos City Council passed an ordinance authorizing the purchase of eight mounted policemen from Stroudsburg Township in Pennsylvania. The firstmounted officer was assigned to duty on December 4th. The San Marcos Mounted Police Department conducted its first criminal investigation on January 1st, 1888. In 1896, the department purchased two more horses and began to use them for law enforcement purposes. On February 5th of that year, a group of ten men stormed into the jail and took control of the jailer and three deputies while they were incarcerated inside. The men then rode off with all eleven deputies until they reached their home town of McKees Rocks where they distributed food to those who had contributed money towards the purchase of firearms for self-defense. On May 7th 1897, Mayor John Hodge authorized the purchase of another horse for use by the police department. That same year saw also increased patrols throughout downtown San Marcos after it was discovered that several criminals had been using various areas as hiding places including a local pharmacy which served as their base of operations during daylight hours when law enforcement could not be located or arrested. In 1899, four additional horses were purchased and used for patrolling purposes in addition to providing cover for officers when needed in case one or more criminals escaped from custody or if there was an unauthorized interruption in service due to weather conditions or other emergency situations such as riots (which had occurred earlier that year). In 1902-1903 eighteen new horses were acquired which made up for lost time since previous years’ horses had died due to old age or disease; however this also increased crime rates because now gangs could no longer rely solely upon individuals within their community being able to provide them with mounts capable enough speed and strength at least equal to any foe they might encounter while out on patrol). In 1915 two additional officers were hired although at this time both departments shared one barracks which inhibited effective patrols because it did not allow for overlap in duties between units making it difficult for commanders to make decisions about which unit should investigate certain cases based upon investigative priorities rather than simply deploying all available resources indiscriminately
San Marcos, Texas is a city in the US state of Texas. The population was 928 at the 2010 census. It is part of Midland-Odessa, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1836 and named for General Antonio Lopez San Miguel. The first post office in San Marcos was established on December 4, 1836 by Colonel James Bowie, who named it for General Antonio Lopez San Miguel who had been killed during the Mexican–American War. The town grew rapidly with the opening of a wagon road from Austin to La Grange in 1837 and an overland route from Odessa to Brownsville in 1841. A boomtown atmosphere characterized early San Marcos as "the Gateway to west Texas." In 1845, José de laRosa y Arellano organized a group of Mexicans who after escaping Ulysses S Grant's forces at Palo Alto were seeking refuge and opportunity in what is now Midland County. They called themselves Santa Clara Nueva bandeja and set up their headquarters at what is now the old town square (now I-10). On February 15, 1846, they proclaimed themselves an independent republic under their new name of Republic of Mexico y Texcoco (Mexico Y Texcoco). In November 1850 they changed their name back to Republic of Mexico y San Marcos (Mexico Y San Marcos). The railroad arrived in 1865 when it was built through Midland County by the Union Pacific Railroad Company as part of its Southern Pacific Railway network. rail traffic increased greatly as people transported goods to East Texas marketplaces such as Amarillo and Lubbock. By 1870 there were more than 500 dwellings and 1,500 residents; Spanish surnames continued to be used until well into the 20th century even though English became more common among Texans by that time. A local cotton gin began operation on White Sands Road near what is now northeast corner Meacham Street about 1880; this led to increased demand for cottonseed oil which drove economic development around this time including major investments by entrepreneurs such as William Humble Jones Sr., Sam Houston Tolliver Jr., John Denton Morse & Co., Wm Jacy Hatch & Sons etcetera culminating with incorporation as a city proper on January 10, 1896 with an enrollment total of just over 100 people primarily farmers/cheap labor migrants from south Central America via El Paso County

The town's economy diversified as production shifted from agriculture to manufacturing through such endeavors as shoe making, papermaking, cattle ranching, lumberjacking and oil drilling. San Marcos experienced some significant milestones during its history including becoming the only municipality in Texas to be annexed into the city of Austin (1902) and being named one of Texarkana's "5 Great American Towns" (1970). In recent years, however, San Marcos has undergone several revitalization efforts which have brought about increased retail development along with increasing attention paid to its vernacular architecture and culture.
In 1846, the United States acquired Texas from Mexico. The land was divided into 12 counties and named for heroes of the Mexican-American War, such as Sam Houston and Antonio López de Santa Anna. San Marcos County was formed on December 20, 1846. In 1861, during the American Civil War, San Marcos County sided with the Confederacy. On April 9, 1865, following Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, San Marcos County became part of the Union State of Texas.
