The history of hard gun cases in San Marcos, Texas begins with the Spanish colonial period. The town was founded in 1821 by Captain Manuel Lopez and named after the Mission San José de las Flores in present day El Paso, Texas. during this time, Mexican colonists were settling in what is now San Marcos, and many of these men brought weapons with them when they moved into the area. At first, these men were used for self-defense only; however, as the population grew and there was more necessity for defense, these men began to use their firearms to take care of criminals and other dangermakers. (Fowler) The early years of the 20th century saw a growth in crime in San Marcos. This trend continued until 1911 when a new law tightened up gun laws in Texas. This new law made it illegal for any person under 21 years old to own any type of handgun without a license from the state government. (Stroud) This law caused many people to arm themselves against crime before it even took effect. Many people who had originally been interested in owning handguns ended up buying them instead because they knew that they would no longer be able to use them against delinquents or other dangerous individuals without fear of legal action. (Fowler) As time went on, fewer firearm owners teenage-aged males became involved with crime because guns didn’t become an important part of their social lives as much as they had during earlier periods. However, young male criminals still frequented areas where firearms were freely available so it was still necessary for those within society who wanted access to such firepower not just to control but also potential victims through intimidation tactics alone if needed. The San Marcos gun case history began in 1951 with the indictment of 36-year-old Edwin "Skip" Kulp for having a rifle that was not registered. The charge was based on an article from the Austin American Statesman which reported that Kulp had bought the rifle at a pawnshop. In 1953, after being convicted of this misdemeanor, Kulp appealed to the Texas Court of Appeals and won because he could show that he had been collector status or have outstanding debts from previous firearms purchases. This ruling allowed him to possess the rifle without any further charges.
The city of San Marcos, Texas is located in the U.S. state of Texas and is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 75,635. It covers an area of 29 square miles (86 sq km). The name "San Marcos" was given to the town by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during his 1842 campaign for governor of Texas. In 1836, Mexican forces under Santa Anna besieged San Marcos and captured it after a three-week siege. Mission San Francisco el Camino Real soon followed and in 1840, the Spanish built a mission there as well. In 1845, Mexican general Antonio López de Santa Anna surrendered at what is now known as San Marcos Creek Bridge following his successful effort to retake Mexico from Anglo Americans. The town was platted in 1846 by James Waco with land grants from Travis County including parts of what are today downtown Austin and east Austin Township. In 1860, A&P Stores opened its first store in what is now downtown San Marcos; that year also saw the incorporation of East Austin Township into much larger Austin Township. A post office called San Marcos was established on October 15, 1852, and remained in operation until February 14, 1916; it was then renamedAustin Parksville Post Office after annexation byAustin on that date. On July 16, 1966 Mayor Lyndon B Johnson announced plans to rename Austin's main thoroughfare interstate Highway 7 South to honor Drayson C Chase Jr., one of America's most significant African American leaders who served twice as mayor (1963-1965) and twice as City Councilman (1966-1968). At that time only about 10% or soof Houston's total population lived within city limits assignments were made for all other major cities on IH7 south with similar results; however someHoustonians did manageto geton board with this idea early on while others resisted(IH7 still retains its original SHV7 designation today). After yearsvarious meetings chaired by both Johnson & Chase resultedincompletionofthe renaming projecton November 5th 1967; IH7 became Interstate highway number 7/SHV7 thereafter

In 1849, U.S. Navy Commodore Edward Byrne established a military post at San Marcos to protect the vital Gulf Coast shipping lanes during the Mexican-American War. Commodore Byrne's outpost served as an important staging ground for American operations against Mexico and its allies. In 1870, The University of Texas opened its doors at San Marcos with a population of just 10 students. It would later grow into one of America's largest universities with over 100,000 students today. In 1915, President Wilson designated San Marcos as the Site for a National Cemetery to honor members of America's First World War coalition forces killed in action on the Mexican side of that conflict. Today,San Marcos retains much of its original Hispanic culture and history with vibrant nightlife and cultural events year-round!
The first known reference to San Marcos is in a document from 1540, which refers to the town as "San Marcos de Alisal" and says it is located on the banks of the San Marcos River. The town was founded by Spanish settlers in 1836, and became an independent Republic in 1846. In 1865, San Marcos was annexed by Austin, Texas, but regained its independence in 1871. The city was named for General Santa Ana (1785-1851), who fought in Mexico's War of Independence and later served as president of the Republic of Texas.
