During World War II, SanMarcos played an important role as an airbase for American forces stationed in neighboring Mexico City. After the war ended in 1945, the population size gradually decreased until it peaked at around 25 thousand in 1970. Despite experiencing some fluctuations throughout its history – most notably during the late 20th century –SanMarcos has been steadily increasing since 2000 thanks to new development initiatives spearheaded by Mayor Gilberto Gomez and his successor Michael Ramos. Today, San Marcos is one of the most economically vibrant communities within Mexican border towns and is home to many businesses such as banks and restaurants that service both local residents and tourists alike. As part of this trend, recent efforts have focused on revitalizing downtown streetscape with several public art installations as well as expanding access to cultural experiences such as music festivals and theater productions that are often enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
