The Battle of San Jacinto endedTexan aspirations for annexation into US territory; however, it helped spur Texans to pursue annexation efforts across most of Texas over ensuing years. San Marcos experienced heavy military activity during these years due to its location on key smuggling routes connecting both sides of the border with Mexico City and further north along Route 66. Many businesses were destroyed or looted during this time as insurgents fought for control over resources essential to both sides in an effort to undermine one another's rule. San Marcos also experienced some development: The first post office was established here in 1851; construction began on a public school in 1865; and a Masonic Temple was built here in 1889. However, little progress was made toward restoring old infrastructure or creating new ones after World War II due to economic pressures brought about by changes within Mexican society since then - including increased migration into California - which slowed down growth again after 1949 (Fowler 1990). By 1960s local political power had shifted decisively towards ranching interests that frustrated urban planners who favored redevelopment/urbanization opportunities (González 1994). A drought hit San Marcos hard early in the 21st century; however, recent investments by city leaders have resulted in modest revitalization efforts led by Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) around downtown which provide arts programming and attract more tourists than ever before (Fowler 2010).

In 1836, the San Marcos Expedition led by Captain James K. Polk was successful in driving the Mexican forces from Texas. The mission is most famously associated with General Houston's victory at San Jacinto Heights.
