As part of this process, Mexicans began streaming into San Marcos from all over Central America to fill key positions in local government. By 1848, San Marcos had become one of Mexicos most important cities with a population nearing 100,000 people. After Mexican Independence was announced on November 15 that year, many Americans fled to Mexico City to support their loved ones who were still loyal to Spain and fought against Mexican independence- though not all Texans did so immediately. Despite this exodus, San Marcos continued growth throughout much of the 19th century thanks in part to its booming trade industry and strong racial/ethnic diversity thanks to its sizable Hispanic community (estimated at around 30% in 1860). However, during the late 19th century economic recession caused by low cotton prices and increased transportation costs made life harder for many downtown businesses including hotels and restaurants that closed their doorsuch as The Gilded Age Hotel abruptly shuttered on January 1st 1888 after more than sixty years behind the scenes[1]. During World War II (1939-1945), San Marcos experienced significant industrial production due to its proximity to major munitions plants such as Dow Corning Glass Works[2]and Lockheed Aircraft Corporation[3]. Additionally,[4], some small businesses managed by Japanese-American citizens flourished during this time period including a Kōsei Boshi sushi restaurant that opened in 1941[5]and Japamansaise Liquor Store which operated until 1951[6]. This wartime prosperity however came at a price with unemployment rates reaching 50% by 1945[7], lower housing values,[8] and extensive damage done both physically (−53 dB)and"internationally"[9]to plants related thereto.[10][11][12][13][14] Some residents relocated outside of town during these difficult times while others chose not To return despite offers from officials within townspeople organizations such as United Gas & Electric Company [15][16]), oil refineries (+25 dB),paper mills (+20 dB),churches (−15 dB)[17]), wharves (−10 dB)[18]), or other industries [+35 dB).[19][20],[21] seeking new opportunities elsewhere in North America or Europe during what has come be called "The Great Depression."
