According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, San Marcos has a moderate oceanic climate (Cfb), abbreviated "Am". San Marcos, Texas was founded on October 29th, 1845 by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his brother-in-law Francisco Alvarado. In 1883, San Marcos became an independent municipality. During World War II, the city was a major target of bombing raids by the United States Air Force because of its large population of Japanese nationals living in Japantown Park. The city also experienced flooding in 1948 that destroyed many homes and businesses. In recent years, San Marcos has seen significant growth as a result of new development including an airport, shopping malls, schools and other sports venues. The city's economy is based primarily on tourism which contributes significantly to its municipal budget.
In 1836, the Mexican government sold land to American settlers in what is now San Marcos County. The first settler was James A. Polk, who purchased land east of present-day San Marcos from the Mexican government for $10 per acre. The Polk family built their home on the site of present-day Flores Elementary School, which they named after their father. In 1876, General Antonio López de Santa Anna organized a military uprising against Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico and his rule in Texas. General Santa Anna's forces marching through San Marcos were met by American forces led by Colonel Andrew Johnson at Mount Carmel Church on November 16th. After a three-hour battle, Santa Anna's forces were defeated and many of his soldiers were killed or captured. Ulysses S. Grant then took command of the American army and drove Santa Anna out of Texas with help from Ulysses S. Grant's brother Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr., future President of the United States
