San Marcos is a small town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The name "San Marcos" means "place of the Marcos family". The first white person to live in what is now San Marcos was José Gomez in 1825. There were three other families living there by 1836: the Sanchez brothers, Joaquin and Manuel; and Fernando de la Garza y Escobar, who later became a filibuster in Texas politics. In 1849, Captain James Hogg founded an adobe fort on Utopia Creek south of present-day San Marcos while he was exploring East Texas for new land to settle. He named it Hogg's Fort after his Scottish friend William Hogg (1787-1858). The fort served as a trading post and headquarters until 1861 when Mexico ceded Texas to the United States following its war with Spain. In 1865, Antonio Villarroel built a cabin on an hill east of where Main Street meets US Highway 281 today. He called it Villa Rica because he received supplies from Mexico City through that route. In 1867, Josefina Valenzuela came across an orange grove near US 281 and decided to try growing oranges here instead of going east to Valencia County where they were being grown commercially by Mexicans. She started a orchard that still grows oranges today. Mrs. Valenzuela financed herOrnamental Orchards Company with American money which supplied them with seed and equipment needed to grow fruit trees during those years without any government assistance or subsidy

In 1849, Presidio of San Marcos was established on land that now includes much of downtown San Marcos. The presidio served as a military outpost and later evolved into a community with a strong Mexican American presence. In 1902, San Marcos merged with Austin to become one city under the jurisdiction of the Austin City Council. The population of San Marcos plummeted in the 1970s following economic volatility in local industries; however, it has since recovered and today has a thriving cultural sector including art galleries, theaters, music venues and restaurants.
