In the early 1880s, San Marcos was a small town in Williamson County, Texas. In 1881, Colonel John F. Griffin donated land to the city of San Marcos for its incorporation. However, it wasn't until 1895 that the first gun store opened in San Marcos. The store was run by George W. Haggerty and his son-in-law, Ira Haggerty. The City of San Marcos limits firearms sales to individuals who have a valid handgun license from another state or country and are eighteen years of age or older. There is no ammunition available for purchase within the city limits
San Marcos, Texas is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 23,447 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat and largest city of Hidalgo County. The region now comprising San Marcos was first settled by Mexican Americans in the 1820s and 1830s. In 1836, it became part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas under President Santa Anna. As Coahuila y Tejas disintegrated into various states during the Mexican Revolution (1810-1821), San Marcos grew increasingly independent until annexation by Texas in 1912 as part of that state's effort to become an American nation following its war with Mexico. The town site was chosen for its strategic location on a north-south trade route connecting Padre Island with Houston and Baytown and Corpus Christi with Laredo on the Gulf Coast. A post office called San Marcos was established in 1837, but no settlers arrived until 1840 when John Wetherbee erected a cabin near what is now downtown San Marcos. By 1850, most residents had relocated to what is now central San Marcos due to crop failures during the mid-19th century droughts caused by floods associated with hurricanes Hermann and Felicia. By 1870, most inhabitants were Anglo Puritans from England who had founded nearby Austin; many English descendants still live there today In 1914–15 Presidio Land Company developers built Mission Reach which spanned nearly 2 miles (3 km) east-west between Main Street running north-south andMission Road ran east-west within it; these two streets formed an "X" shape whose northern end served as Mission Reach's southern entrance while its eastern end linked up with Ivar Dell'Ossa Boulevard leading southward from downtown Austin The land that would become San Marcos was annexed by Hidalgo County on April 1, 1912 after much debate over whether or not to allow an incorporated city to be set up within county boundaries without first obtaining approval from then-County Judge David Milligan As a result of annexation all male citizens aged 21 or older were required to serve in the military during World War I City officials tried unsuccessfully since they could not provide necessary services such as firefighting or trash collection AfterWAR ended all combat servicemen were discharged on November 15 1918 which created a surplus of manpower that led to 12% unemployment among civilian males seeking jobs outside their homes

Its cultural attractions include the Mission Revival style buildings dating back to 1836, restaurants specializing in Spanish cuisine or Tex-Mex fare, historical Museum including exhibits on Mexican culture and history as well as armor from various wars fought throughout this region; shopping for local produce or souvenirs; nightlife options including live music at several bars or clubs; as well as access to many public parks which offer spectacular views of downtownSan Marcos
The San Marcos Mission and Presidio were founded in 1833 by Father Francisco Lopez de Santa Anna. The mission was the first of its kind in Texas, and it remained an active religious center until 1848. In 1834, the presidio was also founded and served as a military post for decades.
