The area now known as San Marcos was first populated by the Kumeyaay people. The first European to visit San Marcos was José Narváez in 1829, and he named it La Isla de la Cruz. In 1836, Antonio López founded a mission at La Jolla which served as the center of Spanish culture in what is now Austin, Texas. Mexican traders arrived in the area in the early 1800s and started to establish settlements. By 1845, there were over fifty settlers living in San Marcos. In 1850, a group of Texans led by General Sam Houston decided to purchase land near present-day Austin from Mexico for $1 million. The town began developing gradually and soon became an important stop on the Chihuahuan Trail. In 1861, San Marcos was annexed into Texas because of its proximity to Austin and its importance as a military post. The population of San Marcos increased rapidly during this time due to new arrivals and development along the railroad corridor. By 1870, there were over 1,000 residents inSan Marcos alone. During World War I (1914-18), San Marcos played an important role as a supply point for troops fighting on both sides of the war. The post-World War II years saw increasing traffic along Interstate Highway 10 and growth in tourism within the town limits. However, many businesses closed during the 1980s recession that hit Austin hard; however, business has picked up since then with some stores opening back up across from IH10 just south of State Capitol Boulevard
