The city continued to grow rapidly due to its strategic location on major trade routes and its growing population of Anglo-Americans. By 1910, San Marcos had over 50 businesses and 1,000 residents. The city experienced another boom in population during World War II when many anglos fled eastern Mexico for Texas because of America's entry into World War II. Because Mexicans were not allowed to work in American wartime industries, many jobs went unfilled and prices for goods increased significantly. After the war ended, some Anglos returned home while others took up residence in other parts of Mexico or abroad. In 1951, San Marcos became an independent municipality with a mayor and council form instead of a municipal government like most other Mexican towns and cities. Growth slowed during the 1970s as energy prices soared and economic conditions changed in Mexico City; however, growth resumed during the 1990s as more people moved intoSan Marcos from other parts of Mexicali County and elsewhere in southernMexico thanks to NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement).
