When Hogg began development on the property, he named it Rancho Agua Fria after then-Governor Manuel Arce who had encouraged him to find land west of Austin for colonization purposes.The community slowly grew around Hogg's ranch until by 1870 it had a population numbering about 100 people including men and women working together on large fields or raising chickens and pigs while also attending services at the local church which was still active today despite being greatly enlarged over time. By 1880 there were 300 residents living within what is now downtownSan Marcos although some families continued to reside on adjacent ranches across Angelina Creek until well into the 20th centurydue to factors such as lack of available water resources or transportation options available outsideof Austin during that time period
In 1836, the Treaty of San Marcos was signed between the United States of America and Mexico. This treaty ended the Mexican-American War. The treaty gave U.S. soil to Texas, which then became a part of the United States.
