Despite these obstacles and challenges faced by san Johnnans throughout their history there has been some success story: since 1970s when oil prices went up SANJuan has seen significant job growth thanks largely to offshore drilling; recent voter settlement efforts that aim at increasing minority representation; building two new hospitals; educational initiatives such as developing an online course on agriculture called “Texas Agriculture 101”; Stampede Days events that attract tourists who enjoy visiting rodeo tracks near town; and development around downtown that continues today despite occasional community protests over plans for high-end development outside what once constituted what amounted to a rural agricultural community
The San Juan County seat is located in the town of San Juan, Texas. The county was established on November 6, 1836 by the United States Government as part of the Texas Annexation Act. As of its creation, San Juan County had a population of 814 residents. It was renamed to Johnson County in 1875 and then again to San Juan County on January 1, 1898 when it became part of the newly created Webb County.
