San Juan, Texas is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was named for San Juan de la Cruz, an early Spanish explorer and trader who discovered the Brazos River in 1795. The original settlers were Mexicans who had come overland from Mexico City. In 1836, San Juan landowner John Hite purchased 281 acres (128 hectares) of what is now downtown San Juan from Alonso Maria Caballero for $1/acre (0.50 hectare). Hite founded a small village on his property and named it after himself: San Juan de la Cruz. He also donated land to the Methodist Episcopal Church and Boots Randolph School District which are still in use today. In 1853, Galveston promoter Isaac Watts bought 318 acres (130 hectares) of what is now downtown San Juan from Don Carlos Pena for $5/acre (2 hectare). Watts organized a town charter meeting on April 15th, 1853 to deliberate about boundaries between Austin and Hudspeth Counties and laid out streetscape including a square mile within what is now downtown San Juan called "Watts Square". The first post office opened in this square mile on October 6th, 1853 with one mailbag per day Delivery service began May 9th with two mailbags per day During the American Civil War most of downtown San Juan lay undefended within Austin's limits due to its strategic location as one point of entry into that city by Confederate forces seeking access southward through Travis County towards Houston

It was named for San Juan de la Vega, a Captaincy of New Spain from 1793 to 1821. It has been called "The Birthplace of Texas" and "The Rancho Santa Fe Settlement". In 1831 Mexican landowner Antonio López granted 4,000 acres (1 km²) of land to James Fenton in what is now Hudspeth County. He named it San José de las Cruces after his wife's family name in California. In 1836 Fenton sold the rancho to General Daniel Webster because he could not live on it. Webster renamed it San José de los Reyes Magos after St John's Day- Holy Week in Mexico City. The first post office was established at San José de los Reyes Magos on October 7, 1840; it was moved to its present location in 1851. Fenton donated 350 acres (12 ha) of this property to the state ofTexas in 1912 as part of the Southeastern Texas Statehood Act which recognized that Texans had settled most of what is now east-central Texas since the mid-19th century. The site became a park with an entrance near present day Loop 101 and FM 626 (New Braunfels Boulevard). In 1924–1925 a group including civic leaders organized an agricultural exposition at nearby Abilene which included exhibits on growing cotton and tomatoes grown by Mexicans working on Fenton's farm; this event is generally recognized as being one of the first public exhibitions devoted exclusively to agriculture in southwestern TX
