It is said that in 1795, San Juan was founded by the brothers Miguel and José de la Vega as a small fishing settlement on the banks of the Rio Grande. By 1836, San Juan had become an important trading outpost on the Texas-Mexico border. The town experienced rapid growth during the period of Mexican rule following independence from Spain in 1821. With its strategic location and access to resources, San Juan quickly became one of Mexico's most important frontier towns. As part of efforts to strengthen Mexican control over the region, American settlers began moving into San Juan in large numbers during the late 1800s. In 1881, San Juan became a municipality within Texas and soon developed into one of the most bustling communities on the Lone Star State's eastern edge. Despite this prosperity, however, sanjuanians were struggling with traditional problems such as poverty and heavy reliance on agriculture for sustenance. In recent years, however,San Juan has undergone major revitalization efforts that have led to dramatic improvements in both its economy and social fabric. These changes have helped representatives from all walks of life band together to promote economic development within their community while also creating new opportunities for residents to connect with each other and make a difference in their local community.

In 1836, San Juan County was organized and named for the Spanish island of Puerto Rico. At the time, this area consisted of only a few small towns and villages. The first American settlers in San Juan County were farmers who traveled to Mexico to trade goods during the Alamo War. By 1840, nearly all of the original Spanish residents had died from disease or violence, leaving no one to take care of their land or provide for their families. In response to this lack of leadership, the Mexican government appointed a board of trustees to manage the land. This group met in Austin and voted to name San Juan County after Texas Governor Manuel Avila Acevedo on July 3, 1840. The first post office in San Juan County was established on December 1, 1840. The population of San Juan at that time was just over 100 people; however, by 1845 it had grown to more than 2,000 people. The town that would become our largest grew up around Pineda Creek because there was no water available farther east so settlers built their homes along creek bankside until they could find enough waterlogged soil above ground level to build roads and foundations necessary for construction purposes. One important factor contributing to this growth is that cotton became an important crop in Texas during this time period and many farms used slaves as workers; thus providing financial support for these endeavors. Santa Anna’s proclamation calling for a boycott against Great Britain led some Texans- especially those living near Houston-to migrate southward into neighboring Mexico in search of work opportunities during what is now known as “The Great Migration” (Kramer et al., 1994). This migration started on April 20th and ended about October 10th when General Sam Houston surrendered at Bear Creek Bridge (Fletcher et al., 2003). Aftermaths such as mass deportations began immediately following this event which resulted in the displacement of over 150,000 Texans (Fletcher et al., 2003). During Reconstruction following Brown’s election as president in 1865 whites regained control over most aspects of local government while black males retained only limited access rights (Heath & Whitehead 1997). Many African Americans leftTexas during this time period due primarily to poverty and racism rather than political persecution (Boydell & Christy 1998). However, white flight did not stop until 1897 when Jim Crow laws were put into place ensuring full segregation throughout most aspects public life across Texas (Lamont 1987; Lamont & Phillips 1988). As a result of these events many Mexicans moved into TX from rural areas throughout Southwestern Mexico seeking opportunity and freedom from possible civil unrest or abuse at home (Cruz 1984b; Fenton 1990b). Today much remains unchanged aboutSan Juan County history including its overwhelming Hispanic majority culture which has shaped both its economy and social fabric dearly since before annexation by TX in 1836-an event that has profound historical repercussions well outside its borders
The first white man to set foot in San Juan County was Manuel Antonio Sanchez in 1836. The area that is now San Juan County was part of the Alamo mission district. In 1846, the Mexican government forced Americans out of the Alamo and began executing Mexicans who had aided or assisted American forces. This led to a large exodus of Texans from Mexico and their replacements arrived in San Juan County with little knowledge of what they were taking on. By 1850, there were only about 10 families living in San Juan County. In 1859, San Juan County was created from parts of Anahuac and Bexar counties when Texas became an independent republic. The county seat was located at Austin until 1870 when it moved to Pecos because the population growth in Austin had become too rapid for Pecos to support. One of the most important moments during this time period happened when General Sam Houston surrendered his army at Harlingen on July 6, 1867 without any resistance from Mexican forces. This event marked a turning point for the region as it allowed for annexation by Texas which later became known as El Paso and Txas
