In the early 1800s, San Juan was a small town in central Texas. It was one of many communities that were founded by Anglo-Americans to settle the lands around Austin. The town grew quickly and by 1851, it had its own courthouse and jail. By 1870, San Juan had a population of over 100 people and it began to grow more powerful than any other community in central Texas. One of the most important factors behind San Juan's success as a town was its location: on the banks of the Brazos River. This allowed for easy trade with neighboring Mexican villages and helped make San Juan an important political center in central Texas. Because of its importance, however, San Juan also became known for its notorious outlaws: namely Jesse James, Billy Boyd, and Arthur Goldthwait. Despite their notoriety, however, these outlaws did not have much impact onSan Juan's economy or social life. In fact, some believe that they may have even helped to drive away some of the town's most influential citizens. Instead, what made San Juan great as a community during this time period was its focus on education: from its earliest days onward, it has been one of the most active communities in Central Texas in promoting literacy rates among its residents. Today,San Juan is still an important community in Central Texas – both because of its history and because of how well it continues to function today as a thriving metropolis with high-quality education options available to all Its residents.

The first gun target in San Juan, Texas was a simple old post office located on the corner of 2nd and Elm. The post office was destroyed in a fire in 1892, but the site is still active as a small park. In 1909, the San Juan Rifle Club started hosting shooting competitions at an outdoor field near Pilar Street and Elm Street. This field became known as "The Range." In 1934, the San Juan Rifle Club built their own Shooting Range on Commerce Blvd. across from City Hall. This range continues to be used by the club today. In 1945, Congress passed the National Firearms Act which made it illegal to possess any firearms without a license from state or local authorities. This law caused many people in San Juan to start purchasing guns illegally.

In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, San Juan was used as an artillery emplacement by General Sam Houston’s forces against Mexican troops. The town was also sacked by Mexican forces in 1847. After the war, many of San Juan’s residents fled to Vera Cruz due to political instability in Texas. However, some remained behind and started a new community called Nacogdoches. In 1849, Nacogdoches became the capital of Texas after Austin failed to gain independence from Mexico. Over time, Nacogdoches developed into one of the most populous cities in Texas with over 200,000 people at its peak in 1925. Today, San Juan is a small community with around 100 residents that still relies heavily on trade with surrounding communities.

The community also provides access to numerous public services such as libraries, parks and playgrounds. It is one of the most vibrant parts of Texans’ larger metropolitan area which has seen dramatic population growth over recent decades.
The San Juan County seat was first established in 1876, when it was combined with the neighboring Hudspeth County. The county's current boundaries were set by state legislation in 1912.
