The history of gun security in San Juan, Texas started with the founding of the city by Mexican immigrants in 1836. The guns that these pioneers brought with them were not adequate for the new community and they had to be replaced quickly. One of the first stores in San Juan was a blacksmith shop, which operated from 1837-1839. A man by the name of Ector was proprietor of this business and he traded weapons with Indians and Mexicans. The store became known as "El Gringo" because it sold only Mexican firearms. In 1847, James Waddell opened a grocery store on Main Street in San Juan. This business served as a hub for trade between Mexicans and Texans until 1853 when Waddell moved to Dallas. He continued trading here until his death in 1865. At this time, Texas became an Republic and there was no government sanctioned arms industry so gun sales increased among Texan farmers and ranchers who needed to protect their property from robbery or attack. In 1861, Confederate forces invaded Texas under General Robert Emancipation Proclamation and many Texans decided to arm themselves for defense against what they saw as Yankee aggression. Gun dealers across the state began selling weapons to these men as well as supplies such as ammunition and horses for transportation back into slavery states. With Texans arming themselves, crime rates decreased but remained high due to the insecurity that people felt about their surroundings at this time period.-San Juan experiences several murders throughout its history due largely to fear of violence.- After Reconstruction repealed all pro-slavery laws in Texas following the American Civil War, white supremacists began moving into San Juan looking for any opportunity to harass or murder unarmed African Americans living here.–Gun dealers did not go away however; they turned into businesses that sold both guns and ammo online…..

Firearms registration began in 1881 when Congress passed the National Firearms Act (NFA). The NFA created a national registry to keep track of all handguns and shotguns registered in the country. The act also required dealers to provide information about their inventory, including serial numbers and make/model identification codes (MODs). The NFA was amended in 1934 to create the Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID) system. The FOID system allowed citizens to purchase handguns without having to register them or obtain an FFL license. The FOID also allowed law enforcement officers to conduct background checks on handgun purchasers without requiring an individual’s fingerprints or other personal information. The possession and use of any firearm is now subject to federal criminal law as well as state law across the United States. Gun possession offences can result in a lengthy prison sentence or a fine up to $250,000 per offence type multiplied by the number of firearms possessed overall. Today, the population of San Juan exceeds 10,000 people and it is home to several important cultural institutions, including the Hispanic University of Texas at San Juan (HUJS), which was founded in 1984; McGovern Park; and USPHS National Museum of American History & Culture.
In 1845, the Mexican government ceded Texas to the United States. The area now known as San Juan County was part of Hudspeth County. In 1848, San Juan County was created from parts of Hudspeth and Travis Counties. It was named in honor of Juan Ponce de León, who explored and claimed the area for Spain on July 4, 1492.
