The grantees found plenty available but chose instead to build their new homes on higher ground where they could see all around them rather than rely solely on natural resources for sustenance like those available downriver at Achenequah Creek proper where they lived before contact with Europeans commenced In 1836 two Comanches attacked Spanish colonists near Mission Concepcion de la Trinidad about 14 miles upstream from present day downtown San Antonio; 22 Spaniards were killed including six mission Indians along with eight Comanche captives taken back into Mexico City where they were bartered for horses and other goods by Mexican traders interested in expanding their trade routes into northeast Texas beyond Old Mexico One potential cause behind this attack may have been political instability caused by increasing Anglo settlement throughout Texas which disturbed Puebloan cultural practices such as raiding Native villages inland while some women & children accompanied their fathers on raids; raiding can also indicate nutritional deficiencies among captured peoples if not properly managed settler groups responded with force against any Indian incursions thereafter This event led some members of Mission Concepcion’s governing council—led by José María Escobar y Tejada—to purchase 4x24 rifles from Captain Bowie at Santa Anna River crossing east side mission just outside modern Presidio Heights neighbourhood today known as Walker Park .
