Santa Anna chose San Juan as his headquarters on July 8th and 10th from which he started planning his future campaigns against American troops in California and Texas respectively. In 1861, during America's Civil War,Texans living near Houston sided with Confederate States army while Texans living east of Houston did not participate because they were afraid that their homes would be captured by Union forces if they opposed Northern aggression. On November 3rd 1861 many people from both towns met at The Alamo for a meeting concerning how best to protect themselves from Yankees coming into their towns looking for them (the Battle of The Alamo). After studying maps and discussing tactics it decided that force should be used instead to get surrendering Texans out so they could be held prisoner until allowed back into Mexico proper according to Treatyof Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended hostilities between America and Mexico

By 1865 there were only three businesses in the town center and one church. The last resident to die in San Juan was John Fenton, who died on December 2nd of that year. The first post office was established at Austin on November 16th of 1846; it closed on February 1st of 1847 because no mail could be delivered to rural areas due to transportation problems. The first train to reach San Juan stopped at an old farmhouse east of town on January 6th of 1850. San Juan's population reached 100 residents by 1860; however, it would not grow until after Texas annexation in 1870 which resulted in an increase in transportation needs for goods moving between Mexican and American territory (the Comanche Wars had started). During this time period more than 20 businesses were established along both sides of Nueces River; however, most businesses closed during the 1880s due to competition from larger towns such as Corpus Christi or Lubbock. In 1907–08 a large fire destroyed most buildings within 500 feet of Nueces Street; although some people managed to rebuild using materials available at their homes or borrowed from neighbors, many shops and residences were lost forever including several Masonic halls which still stand today as well as a Baptist church built into a hillside adjacent to Interstate 10 near Manor Road East). Despite these losses, development continued throughout the 1920s with new housing being built along Waugh Drive upriver from downtown while other industries such as agriculture increased production across much of east Austin outside of downtown where railroads had long been major employers
The town of San Juan, Texas was founded in 1856 by the brothers Antonio and Francisco Lopez. The name is Spanish for "sanctuary." The town was originally a stopping point on the Santa Fe Trail, and became a center for cattle and sheep ranching. In 1907, San Juan incorporated as a city.
