San Benito is a town in Maverick County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in San Benito was John Hance on December 3, 1836. A post office called San Benito was established in 1838 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. In 1840, Manuel Gomez settled a ranch north of San Miguel de Allende on what is now the east side of US-290. In 1844 Felipe González founded the village of Mercedes about south of San Miguel de Allende on land that he had purchased from José Córdoba y Velasco. González named his settlement after his mother's birthplace – Mercedes (meaning "milk") in Spanish and Benito (meaning "town"). In 1846 an act were passed by the state legislature providing for an election to be held to select a school trustee for each county within Texas; however, this law did not come into effect until November 6, 1850 due to lack of signatures from all but one county authorized to hold elections under it. On October 20th 1850 Antonio Zamora voted at an election held at San Miguel de Allende against Samuel Houston as trustee for Bexar County because Zamora felt that Houston would not faithfully execute the duties assigned him by law as trustee and that he should have been chosen instead by popular vote; this led toHouston defeating Zamora with over 60% of the vote when all ballots were tabulated later that day. In response to the 2002 Salt Lake City Shooting, Mayor Rocky Anderson proposed the ordinance that would require law enforcement officers to use tasers only if they have a reasonable belief that the person they are arresting is not compliant with state or city law. The ordinance was passed in May of 2003 and went into effect on July 1, 2003.
The town of San Benito, Texas was founded in 1836 by the Mormons. The town quickly became a thriving community, and it soon gained a reputation as a place where white people and Native Americans could live together in peace. In 1840, the town was renamed for Saint Benedict, an Italian monk who had become famous for his work in reconciling Jews and Catholics. The town continued to grow over the years, and by 1870 it had reached its present size. In 1898, San Benito voted to secede from Texas based on racial considerations. The vote outraged many Texans, and several hundred stores were looted and burned during the riots that followed. The townsfolk rallied behind their new government, however, and San Benito remains one of the most recognisable communities in Texas today.
The San Benito County seat of San Benito, Texas was first established in 1836 when the Republic of Texas was formed from parts of New Mexico and Coahuila. The county seat moved to its current location in 1872 when it was created from part of Travis County.
