San Benito is a small town in Bexar County, Texas, United States. The population was 756 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio–Brazos County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to settle in what is now San Benito County was José de la Cruz who came from Spanish territory in central Mexico in 1727. La Cruz named his new settlement "Santa Barbara" after his royal patron saint, Barbara of Aragon. He also built a chapel and some other structures hereabouts. In 1824 Mexican explorer Hidalgo y Costilla discovered the Trinity River and named it for St. Anthony of Padua, who had been martyred on that river more than two centuries earlier. Costilla's party followed the Trinity until they reached what is now Kendallville (now Kendallville proper) about 12 miles south of present-day San Benito. Here they erected a log cabin and began homesteading their discoveries with local Indian traders as their base of operations for exploring this part of Texas A&M University's then newly acquired land east of Houston Heights north of Clear Lake Lake where today’s Rice Stadium stands were later founded.. In 1826 Mexican general Antonio López de Santa Anna arrived in this area and soon began construction on two large rancho grants he had just received from President Sam Houston at Austin’s urging – Rancho El Paso to the north and Rancho San Jacinto to the south – both located near present-day San Benito Creek which flows through town center forming its southern border with Menard Park across Main Street/Route 281E from whence Route 281N leads eastward into downtown for an interchange with Interstate 10/US 90 before rejoining I-10 westbound at US 90 exit 20 just past present-day Cathedral City Cemetery before continuing northwest along I-10W within city limits where he placed a post known as Presidio Hill (later Hill Country Arsenal) near today’s Valley View Middle School while Fort Hood Army Base lay immediately adjacent to its eastern boundary less than one mile distant.. A school committee was formed early in 1828 to design and build a schoolhouse which opened Sept 1st under name “Church Elementary” but eventually became “San Miguel Evangelical Lutheran School” later renamed “St John Catholic High School”; enrollment peaked at 230 students in fall 1830 but fell off sharply due mainly to disease brought by immigrants rather than any lack thereof among locals; original building remains standing side by side w/ current high school building since 1898; tuition free during daylight hoursExcept Thursdays & Fridays when 3 hrs free allowsitto attend public or parochial schools throughout countyand many private academies thruout state .. Students raised money continued fundraising even tho no physical school ever built & tax bills resulted so members could vote on funding sources . District officialsvetoed bill proposed annexing much larger unincorporated parts of countieswestofthesanbenitostate
In 1836, the Mexican government granted a land grant to José Joaquín de San Benito. The grant was in an area that is now known as San Benito County, Texas. The site of the present-day town of San Benito was given to José Joaquín by President Antonio López de Santa Anna. The name "San Benito" means "Saint Benjamin."
