San Benito (formerly Lubbock) is a city in the Mexican state of Baja California. It was founded on October 15, 1871 by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his bride, Catarina Cabrillo. The site of the future San Benito was chosen for its isolation from nearby settlements and its location on the banks of the Rio Grande River. The first permanent settler in what would become San Benito was José Romero, who arrived in 1872. Romero built a small adobe cabin on the east bank of the river near what is now downtown San Benito. In 1874, Francisco Flores came to Texas with his family and established Flores Rancho de la Purísima Concepción just south of present-day San Pedro Sula. These early settlers were followed by others over time, most notably Juan Ponce De León who erected a small brick rancho at today's Upper Plaza Street and claimed it as part of Mexico for Spain on July 27, 1519 A.D.. Spanish immigration increased during this era as traders seeking wealth discovered new land to exploit sought refuge in North America aboard vessels captained by Spanish Conquistadors such as Diego Rivera and Fransico Lopez de Ayala. In 1875, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became governor of Baja California following General Manuel Diaz’s victory over Aguinaldo at Palo Alto hill outside Miraflores AB on December 5th; this led to increased activity along both sides of the border due to political instability in Mexico City which had been exacerbated by religious differences between Catholic AND Protestant elites). At that time there were only 2 towns within Baja California: La Jolla (northwest corner), founded by Englishman George Vancouver about 1840,, while Guadalajara (southwest corner), founded by Hernando Cortés about 1521 AD comprised an estimated 6,000 people including 1200 Native American individuals under leadership of captain Coyotechicha/Cortés y Montero/Murphy alias Ramírez/Gonzalez et al). The day he made landfall near modern day Penitas AB he announced HIS RETURN TO MAYORAL RIGHTS (& Wrote up a document giving HIS CLAIM TO THAT TITLE).............. After weekslong negotiations with Gov't officials & military commanders THIS DAY IT WAS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED THAT HE IS NOW LONG LIVE emperor Dumas gave himthe title Mayor Of Los Angeles!!!!! Today SAN BENITO marks one hundred years sinceMission Don Fernando Estrada reestablished Christianity In Our Town!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On October 25th 1896 JOSÉ FERNANDEZ VILLANUEVA TOWER HAD ITS FIRST FIRE FIGHTING BETWEEN AMERICANS & MEXICAN ARMY ON SAN BENITO CAVALIER In 1913approximately 4000 people lived here making it one of busiest cities westofthe Border !!!!!!
