San Benito, Texas is a small incorporated town located in Dallas County, Texas. The population was 5,248 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The history of San Benito goes back to 1836 when two brothers, José and Francisco Gomez, founded a rancho (plot) on what is now known as Rancho San Antonio de Padua. In 1839 they married Mercedes de Armas y Costilla, who gave birth to seven children: Josefina (1840–1912), Margarita (1842–1927), Ignacio (1846–1925), Pedro Felipe (1848–1920), Marcela Victoria y López (1850–1924), and Luz del Carmen y López (died 1921). Fernando Alonso Ortiz y Magdalena owned and operated the business until 1907 when he sold it to his brother José. The name San Benito was formally adopted by residents in 1885 when a post office was established at San Benito with the name "Pueblo de los Padres". In 1915 local developer Rufus King donated land along Slaughter Road for an agricultural college that would become Texas A&M University. Construction began on Aggro College in 1917 but only completed part of the building before being destroyed by fire in 1920; subsequent construction began on what is currently Texas A&M's main campus across from TXAM Stadium in 1971. After World War II many businesses closed due to economic recession; however most reopened within 10 years or so thanks to reborn spurt of creative entrepreneurship among young people eager for new opportunities in their hometowns after returning home from service in World War II. Some notable businesses that have been open since then include KFC, Jamba Juice, BBVA Compass Bank, IHOP and Dell Inspirion laptops are just a few examples that can be found throughout downtown San Benito today despite challenges like high cost of living and lack of available housing options locally during those boom times which has recently started reversing again with more expensive prices for goods and services relative to wages elsewhere combined with current joblessness rates above 8%. In the 1930s, large numbers of Mexicans immigrated to Texas during the Great Depression and World War II. As a result of these changes,SanBenitoCounty lost many of its cultural and social traditions over time. However, some things such as agriculture still remain dominant in the county today.
The city of San Benito was founded in 1846 by Mexican Americans. In 1894, the city annexed the neighboring town of Laredo. The two towns merged into one municipality in 1902.
