San Benito is a small town in Tyler County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tyler–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The San Benito Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It covers . The first Europeans to visit what is now Tyler County were Father Jacques Marquette and Father Francisco Xavier de la Salle in 1699 and 1701 respectively. Spanish colonists arrived in 1821, and by 1845 there were 401 residents living in sixteen buildings on a triangular area bounded by State Highway 281 (Now US 87), Old US Hwy 281 (now FM 936), Polk Street, and Railroad tracks that led east to Amarillo and west to San Antonio. In 1851 a schoolhouse was built on Williamson Road across from present-day US 287/FM 936; it became known as "Alamo School." A post office called San Benito was established at this site in 1850, but it never operated because no mail reached the town. In 1891 an act of Congress designated Tyler County as part of modern-day Dallas County, which rationalized itsotta number of county seats from nineteen to seven with the addition of San Benito. On November 15, 1912 voters elected James Mclntyre as the first Mayor of San Benito after he won election as a Democrat over incumbent Republican John Witherspoon by more than 2 million votes statewide including 303 cast hereabouts. The Austin American-Statesman reported on January 6, 1913 that Mr Mclntyre had been chosen “not only for his high political attainments but also for his efficient management”of affairs since taking office one year earlier; however he resigned less than two months into his term when indicted for bribery charges brought against him by then Governor John Connally’s new administration following investigations into corruption throughout much of Travis County). The town of San Benito formed in 1850 when a group of Englishmen who had been living in Mission Concepcion decided to establish themselves there as a farming community. The first post office was established in these days near present day intersection Of I-10 and US 281. By 1865, however, many Anglo settlers had left for other parts of Texas because they were frustrated with their inability to get voting rights orland from Mexico City despite repeated requests from the governor and congressman. Only two buildings remain from when San Benito was founded: A Methodist Episcopal Church (1850) and an old schoolhouse (1865). There is also evidence that early residents did not use water supplies located east of US 281 due to fears that this area would become ceded to Mexico if war broke out between Texas and Mexico over this issue. One reason why few buildings remain from whenSanBenitoprovincewasfounded is because most people just abandoned the area after being offered land elsewhere within Texas or being driven out by Indian wars or askers from New Spain ( afterward Mexico ). Mexicans who remained began building new homes around 1870s when they realized there would be enough land available once the trains started coming through town for them to settle .
The first permanent European settlement in San Benito County was founded by the Franciscans in 1769. The area that became San Benito County was part of Alamo County, Texas, until it was organized as a present-day county on November 6, 1846.
