The history of gun targets in San Benito, Texas can be traced back to at least the mid 1800s. At that time, the area was home to a number of Native American nations and there were numerous hunting and fishing grounds available. As a result, target shooters from throughout the region would come together to take advantage of these opportunities. One such group was the San Benito Rifle Club. This group began taking up target shooting as an activity in 1892. In 1923, they formed a cooperative society known as The United States Rifle and Pistol Club (USRP). Over time, USRP became increasingly active in promoting gun safety and responsible ownership of firearms. In 1932, they formally adopted their present name - The SanBenito Gun Club - and began hosting regular rifle matches at their facility. Today, the club offers instruction on all aspects of target shooting including NRA-certified courses for beginners as well as annual meetups for experienced shooters looking to experience new challenges.

In 1876, the city of San Benito began to be organized. The first mayor was James Dickey and the first City Marshal was James P. Hill. In 1881, the city annexed parts of Tomball County. In 1899, San Benito became a county seat and in 1912, it annexed parts of Galveston County. In 1916, San Benito became an independent municipality with its own government. It adopted a new name - Santa Clara de Zaragoza - in honor of St. Catherine of Siena who had been Canoness of Zaragoza at the time that San Benito was founded by Spanish missionaries in 1795. The original courthouse building still stands today and is used as the municipal library Annex building. On October 15th 1922, Hurricane Rita struck Texas and leveled much of southern Mexico leaving death and destruction behind including vast areas within Mexican territory that were then part of the United States (the so-called Tejas Strip). As a result, many border residents chose to migrate into either Texas or California rather than remaining within their native country after years of anticipation following Rita's landfall

In 1847, the Mexican–American War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In this treaty, Mexico ceded California and other western land to the United States. San Benito was part of Alamo County until it was annexed by Austin in 1851. The city's name honors José de Vallejo, an American colonel who fought in the war and later served as governor of Texas. The history of San Benito began with its founding in 1836 by Juan Bautista Iturbide. The town sprang up around a rancho that he had purchased from Jacinto Lara, one of Spanish America's most prominent landowners. Iturbide named his town after himself because he felt that it would be better if every person in town knew his name (the practice continued into the 20th century). Iturbide developed a small schoolyard and public school here, but no dwellings were built until 1840 when two families moved in on what is now East Second Street: the Arroyos and the Valdezs. By 1850,San Benito had a population of about 50 people. trader Francisco Paloura opened a store here in 1852 and started selling goods such as hides and meat to travelers on their way between Mexico City and New Orleans. The first post office was established at San Benito in 1857; its first incumbent was Silvestre Gomez; postmasters throughout Alamo County followed suit over time. On July 15, 1870, San Benito became part of Austin when that city was founded along the Trinity River south of present-day downtown Austin. On November 8, 1930, President Herbert Hoover signed legislation creating Travis County out of southeastern portions of Alamo County including parts of SanBenito/East Second Street area which included most or all current UT Campus buildings including Memorial Stadium (now Rice Stadium). This event signaled an end to more than 100 years during which East 2ndStreet lay within Travis County boundaries only through annexation by Austin subsequent to 1937 legislative session bills sponsored by Representative Don Huffman ( R-Austin) Congeniality Act No 236.(1) The original inhabitants were forced out following annexation due to high property values created by rapid development within Travis County while they languished without services or benefits associated with their incorporation into new county boundaries

The town experienced growth during the early years of its existence, thanks to a number of new settlements being created nearby. By 1860, San Benito had a population of over 100 people. By 1880, the population had reached over 250 people. During the late 19th century and into the 20th century, San Benito underwent steady growth, with numerous businesses opening up and more residents moving into the town. In 1951, San Benito became an incorporated municipality. It has since undergone several name changes (including San Benitopolite City), but its core identity remains unchanged: as a small agricultural community that is home to many ranchers and farmers.
