San Benito is a city located in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,830 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Webb County. The first known permanent European settlers in what is now Webb County were Frenchmen and Missionaries who arrived in 1736. Captain James Bowie's Expedition established Fort Bowie in 1802 on an island near the present-day town of San Benito. Bowie's fort served as a stronghold against Native American attacks until it was destroyed by Seminole Indians in 1813. In 1859, General Sam Houston purchased Rancho Santa Fe from José Antonio “Pancho” Villa for $10,000 dollars and named it San Benito after his mother's birthplace, Benigna Parish, Louisiana. In 1865–1867 during the Mexican-American War, General Robert E. Lee ordered Confederate forces to burn down much of San Miguel de Allende (present day Austin) after overwhelming Mexican forces there under Mexican President Porfirio Diaz. Little or nothing remains of that event today except for some foundations and an restored bank building which still stands on Fourth Street downtown San Benito. In 1912 Governor John Hogg signed legislation creating Webb County from land lying east of Nacogdoches claimed by Hudspeth County - including part of what is now San Benito - making it one of the original seventy counties created during Reconstruction following the American Civil War (see also: Redevelopment Act). The city of SanBenito was incorporated as a municipality on January 1, 1916; later that year annexation by Austin completed its formal incorporation into the City Limits Area as well as providing all municipal services to residents within City Limits Area only while annexation remained pending final approval from Travis County Commissioners Court; both annexation processes were completed on November 3rd 1966 pursuant to Resolution No. 9673 filed with Commissioners Court dated October 20th 1965 effective immediately prior thereto.........................................................................................

However, during the Depression years (1929-1939) the city struggled financially and lost much of its commercial activity. By 1939, however, San Benito had regained some of its former glory as an agricultural center with a population of around 15,000. During World War II the city played an important role in the war effort as it was home to nearly 100 military detachments and numerous munitions plants. After the war many businesses closed down but new ones began to form including several hospitals and schools. Today San Benito is one of Texas' most vibrant cities with a proud history that has been deeply influenced by its location on the Rio Grande River Valley
The first white people to set foot on the San Benito Peninsula were the Comanches in 1821. The first permanent Anglo-American settlers were the Griffin brothers, who arrived in 1836. They founded the town of Griffin on what is now known as Point Isabel, and named it after their brother. The town was abandoned by 1840, but was re-established in 1851 by another group of Americans, this time led by James Fenton. The town prospered until it was destroyed by a fire in 1906.
