San Benito, Texas is a town located in northern Starr County, Texas. The population was 1,875 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler to arrive in San Benito was Captain Donelson who arrived in 1846 and founded what is now known as Dutchtown. This settlement included a post office, store, and school. In 1851, John Potter settled nearby and started Potter's Landing which became the most important trading center for the area until it burned down in 1865. In 1872, Isaac McCoy established McCoy's Crossroads which served as a transportation hub for the area for many years before it also burned down. In 1907-1908, San Benito built its first church which was called First Presbyterian Church because it was consecrated by Rev Dr Averill Harriman on October 25th of that year. They also constructed a jail in 1911 and named it "Old Jail" after Colonel Smedley Butler who had donated land to build it. The courthouse building (now used as apartments) was completed in 1915 and served as court house until 1951 when the county seat went to Austin. In 1936-1937, San Beniti built their second church which was referred to as "Second Presbyterian". With growing populations and an expanding economy due to agriculture and ranching activities within the surrounding area there were more needs for services such as schools, churches, roads etc., so Second PresbyterianChurch became known simply as San Benito Elementary School from then on until1965 when property adjacent to main campus sold off resulting in demolition of original structure including bell tower; this left only foundations remaining today that can be seen from campus entrance drive). In 1949-1950 they erected a third church which became known simply as Third Presbyterian Church after annexation of neighboring town of Friendswood by city of Austin; thischurch still functions today (and can be found behind City Hall). From 1965 through 1978 Third PresbyterianChurch underwent multiple changes with additions/remodeling including brick façade addition (1974), new roofline (1976), ceiling fanlight replacement project associated with state funding program grant (#862), installation of cornerstone weight system (1978), water heater replacement project associated with landmark legislation - Texas State Act 163 (1983) & subsequent repairs/replacements throughout its tenure including 1990 roofline change #914 & 2001 veranda restoration project following floods damage; final rededication occurred on November 8th 2006 during Fiesta celebration marking 50 years since original construction date Following closure of Main Campus during 2011 semester due to budget cutting efforts Third Presbyterians reopened Academy Building located across street from main campus Gatehouse under new name "SanBenito Academy" today serving grades PreKindergarten thru 12th grade along with 10 leased classrooms plus 3 full time staff members teaching various subjects offered via online learning program SAN BENITO ACADEMY

The San Benito County seat was originally founded in 1836 by Captain John H. Richardson, who named it for theBenito River. The first post office was established in 1837, and the county was organized in 1840.
