The counties in southern San Benito County were organized on February 14, 1907 from parts of old Maverick County including parts of unincorporated portions of Alpine and Atascosa Counties lying eastward along Interstate 10 from Austin to Waco. In 1940, most of what is now Travis County was added to San Benito County through a annexing process following World War II when much of central Texas came under Japanese occupation during World War II. San Benito’s annexation into Travis County comes about a few years after an act by then-Governor John Connally that increased land values in San Benito so he could build new state prisons at Laredo instead of building jails in Austin because Austin had been built too cheaply for state needs. SAN BENITO COUNTY WAS FORMALLY ADDED TO TEXAS ON APRIL 20TH OF THAT YEAR!
In 1836, San Benito was founded by José Altuve and José Galindo. They were two of the original settlers in what is now Texas. In 1840, San Benito became a Spanish colony. The first governor was Felipe de Neve y Pereda. In 1846-7, it became part of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. On November 6, 1847, it became part of the United States as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
